Remote E-Commerce Jobs: Careers Behind Online Stores

Posted on September 8, 2026September 8, 2026 By Natalie Jackson

When shoppers visit an online store, they see product photographs, descriptions, prices and a checkout button. Behind that polished storefront is a remote team managing everything from marketplace listings and inventory to customer retention and order problems.

That work is expanding. U.S. retail e-commerce sales reached an estimated $340.2 billion during the second quarter of 2026—12.2% higher than the same quarter in 2025. E-commerce represented 17.1% of total retail sales.

For job seekers, that means e-commerce offers far more opportunities than packing orders or answering customer emails. Digital brands need people who can organize products, interpret customer behavior, coordinate fulfillment and keep revenue moving.

1. Marketplace Manager

Marketplace managers oversee a brand’s presence on platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, Etsy and eBay.

Their responsibilities may include:

  • Monitoring account health and marketplace policies
  • Updating prices, promotions and product availability
  • Coordinating advertising campaigns
  • Resolving suppressed or inaccurate listings
  • Tracking sales, returns and customer reviews
  • Planning inventory for seasonal demand

This position combines merchandising, marketing and operations. Strong marketplace managers understand how small changes to pricing, availability and product content can affect visibility and conversion rates.

Employers frequently look for experience with marketplace dashboards, spreadsheets, reporting tools and product-feed systems. Experience selling your own products online can also provide useful portfolio material.

2. Product Listing Specialist

Product listing specialists transform basic product information into accurate, persuasive storefront content.

A typical assignment might involve creating a product title, organizing specifications, selecting a category, uploading images, building variations and checking that every detail follows the platform’s requirements.

The role requires more than creative writing. A listing specialist must balance:

  • Search-friendly product language
  • Brand voice
  • Accurate specifications
  • Marketplace rules
  • Customer questions
  • Conversion-focused copy

Entry-level opportunities may appear under titles such as catalog specialist, product content coordinator, merchandising assistant or marketplace listing associate.

Artificial intelligence can generate basic descriptions, but employers still need people to verify claims, correct inaccurate details and ensure that hundreds—or thousands—of listings remain consistent. Developing skills in catalog quality assurance, keyword research and product-feed troubleshooting can make you more valuable than someone who only writes descriptions.

3. Customer Retention Specialist

Acquiring a new customer is only part of building an online business. Customer retention specialists encourage existing customers to return.

They may manage:

  • Loyalty and rewards programs
  • Subscription communications
  • Post-purchase campaigns
  • Win-back offers
  • Customer surveys
  • Churn and repeat-purchase reporting
  • VIP customer segments

Retention is different from traditional customer service. A customer service representative generally solves an immediate problem. A retention specialist studies behavior across the customer journey and looks for ways to strengthen the long-term relationship.

People with backgrounds in customer support, hospitality, account management or membership services may already possess many of the communication skills required for this work.

4. Email Marketing Specialist

Email remains an important channel for online stores because it allows brands to communicate directly with customers rather than relying entirely on social media or marketplace algorithms.

Remote email marketing specialists create newsletters, promotions and automated customer journeys. Common campaigns include:

  • Welcome sequences
  • Abandoned-cart reminders
  • Product launches
  • Post-purchase education
  • Replenishment reminders
  • Customer re-engagement campaigns

The strongest candidates can do more than write attractive emails. They understand audience segmentation, testing, deliverability, privacy requirements and performance metrics such as click rates, conversion rates and revenue per recipient.

Marketing-related career benchmarks also remain encouraging. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 2025 median annual wage of $78,760 for market research analysts and marketing specialists, with employment projected to grow 7% from 2025 through 2035.

Actual email marketing salaries vary significantly according to experience, company size and responsibility.

5. E-Commerce Operations Specialist

If marketing attracts customers, e-commerce operations ensures that the company can fulfill its promises to them.

Operations specialists monitor what happens after someone places an order. They may investigate payment failures, inventory discrepancies, delayed shipments, returns and communication gaps between the store and its fulfillment partners.

Responsibilities can include:

  • Monitoring daily order flow
  • Coordinating inventory updates
  • Investigating fulfillment exceptions
  • Managing returns and refunds
  • Communicating with vendors
  • Documenting workflows
  • Building performance reports
  • Preparing for promotions and seasonal sales

This role is well suited to organized problem-solvers who can remain calm when several systems or departments are involved.

As a related benchmark, logisticians—professionals who manage how products are distributed and delivered—earned a median annual wage of $82,320 in May 2025. Employment is projected to grow 18% between 2025 and 2035.

Not every e-commerce operations position is classified as a logistician, but the data demonstrates the value employers place on supply-chain and product-flow expertise.

Other Remote E-Commerce Careers to Explore

Depending on the company, similar work may be advertised under titles such as:

  • E-commerce coordinator
  • Digital merchandising specialist
  • Catalog administrator
  • Marketplace advertising specialist
  • Customer experience coordinator
  • CRM or lifecycle marketing specialist
  • Conversion-rate optimization analyst
  • Inventory planning assistant
  • Order management specialist
  • E-commerce virtual assistant

Search several variations instead of relying on one job title. Smaller companies often combine listing, customer communication and store administration into one position, while larger organizations typically divide those duties among specialists.

What Can You Earn in Remote E-Commerce?

Because “e-commerce” covers several career paths, there is no single reliable salary for the entire industry. These national BLS figures provide useful benchmarks for related occupations:

Related occupation2025 median pay
Customer service representative$21.53 per hour
Market research analyst or marketing specialist$78,760 per year
Logistician$82,320 per year
Operations research analyst$88,940 per year

Customer service representatives earned a national median of $21.53 per hour in May 2025. Operations research analysts, whose work may include improving supply chains, pricing and business operations, earned a median of $88,940.

These figures represent broad occupations—not guaranteed salaries for a particular remote job. Compensation will depend on the employer, location, experience, platform knowledge and whether the position involves execution or strategic ownership.

Skills Employers Want

Although requirements differ, several skills appear throughout the e-commerce field:

  • Spreadsheet organization and reporting
  • Clear product and customer communication
  • Marketplace or store-platform experience
  • Basic performance analytics
  • Inventory and order-flow knowledge
  • Careful proofreading and quality control
  • Email automation and audience segmentation
  • Workflow documentation
  • Independent problem-solving

Familiarity with platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central or common email-marketing systems can help. However, transferable skills matter too. Someone who has managed records, customers, schedules or inventory in another industry may have a stronger foundation than they realize.

How to Build Experience Without an E-Commerce Job

You do not have to wait for an employer to give you a portfolio.

Choose a real or fictional product and create a small demonstration project containing:

  1. An improved product listing
  2. A three-email welcome or abandoned-cart sequence
  3. A spreadsheet for monitoring inventory and orders
  4. A brief storefront audit identifying customer-experience problems
  5. A simple workflow for handling delayed or damaged orders

Present the project as a short case study. Explain the problem, your recommended solution and the metric you would monitor. Employers want to see that you understand how individual tasks contribute to sales and customer satisfaction.

Is Remote E-Commerce Right for You?

Remote e-commerce can be a strong fit if you enjoy combining digital tools with real-world business activity. Products must be presented accurately, marketed effectively, delivered successfully and supported after the sale.

Some positions are creative. Others are analytical or operational. Many combine all three.

The best opportunity may not have “e-commerce” in its title. It could be listed as marketplace coordinator, lifecycle marketer, catalog specialist or order management associate. Focus on the responsibilities, the tools and the business problems you would solve.

Online stores may look effortless to customers, but they succeed because skilled professionals are working behind the screen—and much of that work can be performed from almost anywhere.
